WHat is SOUL IN THE CITY ?
Have you heard about “Soul in the City” and wondered?
Is it a Summer Youth Camp? YES, sort of. Is it a Youth Mission Trip? YES! Is it local? YES! Is it expensive? NO! Is it worthwhile and relevant for today’s teens? ABSOLUTELY! Is there anything else like it? NO! Is it a zany, crazy, impactful, full-on Holy Spirit-filled, fun and deeply life changing youth event? YES, YES, YES! Now you’re getting closer!
What exactly is it?
SitC is a week-long summer experience that gives 7-12th grade students the opportunity to serve at various work sites in and around the Houston area. Throughout the week, the youth build their own faith, strengthen their relationships with other youth, and share the love of Christ out in the City in tangible ways.
All participants (both youth and their adult leaders) are housed at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in Spring, Texas, for the week. Mornings begin with devotions, quiet time and prayer, then teaching that lays out the plan of the day. Week-long “Family Group” work teams then head out to their day of service. Work sites in the past have included: VBS programs, food shelter serving, street church services, food pantries, meals on wheels deliveries, food banks, retirement centers, special needs centers and neighborhood renovations. We have partnered with Generation One, Youth with a Mission, Houston Food Bank, Church in the Park, Salvation Army and many more, as we truly aim to be the hands and feet of Christ working with these ministries.
Upon return from the worksite day, there are onsite showers and some always ZANY (and sometimes wet or messy!) games and fun together before dinner. Our meals are provided during this week by an amazing volunteer team who go above and beyond to make sure everyone is well fed! And there is an absolute MOUNTAIN of cookies involved!
After dinner, the evening consists of wonderful worship time with lots of music, a Biblical life application teaching and small "Family Group" discussion and interaction, before heading back together for even more worship! I can’t begin to describe all the activities here, but I hope this gives you a quick idea of what Soul in the City is. All of this adds up to one HUGE week, both growing closer to Christ and showing the world what His hands can do.
During the week, entire teams of adult volunteers oversee Security, Physical Worksite Management, Health and Safety and full time Prayer Coverage, not to mention Drivers and Worship Music and Cook Teams and a few other surprises....
If this sounds like something your youth would like to be a part of, talk to your Youth Director or Priest, or contact Jim Boggs at [email protected], 281-255-4111. And we are ALWAYS open for more adult volunteers to help! Volunteers contact [email protected] to get plugged in.
For church youth groups interested in attending, adult chaperones are required with full participation in the event. Safety requirements are one adult for every five youth. Additionally, if there are male youth, there must be at least one male adult; if there are female youth, there must be at least one female adult attending (from each church). Background checks must be submitted for each adult and each church will be asked to verify that all their adults have gone through child/youth safety protection programs. Contact Jim Boggs at [email protected], 281-255-4111 for group registration.
We ask that you would please be in prayer for this event leading up to and during the week of July 15-21 and we would love to have you join us if you can !!
We pray that many students and adults will join us in our efforts to reach others in the name of Jesus Christ.
